When light hits the surface, a golden, silky-shimmering stripe travels across the mineral – similar to the pupil of a big cat. This effect arose through a fascinating pseudomorphosis: originally parallel-grown crocidolite fibers (a hornblende-asbestos type) were replaced over millions of years by crystal-clear quartz (silica). The fine fibrous structure remained perfectly preserved. Embedded iron hydroxide (limonite) gives the stone its world-famous honey-yellow to golden-brown coloration. This piece comes from very deep rock layers. The age of the host rock is estimated to be Precambrian – this stone is thus an impressive 1.5 to 2 billion years old.
