A MINIATURE GILT-METAL MODEL OF THE WARWICK VASE

19th Century, after the antique, of campana form, the everted rim with a beaded lip above bands of husks and of fruiting vine, the body cast in relief with Bacchic masks and lion pelts between intertwined vine stem handles, upon a gadrooned socle and a spreading circular foot. 6.2cm high, The Warwick Vase, a Roman marble of the 2nd Century AD, was found in fragments at Hadrian's Villa at Tivoli in about 1771 by the Scottish painter and dealer Gavin Hamilton. Restored under the direction of Giovanni Battista Piranesi for Sir William Hamilton, it passed to his nephew George Greville, 2nd Earl of Warwick, who built a Gothic greenhouse at Warwick Castle to house it. Much copied through the 19th Century in silver, bronze and porcelain, the original has been in the Burrell Collection, Glasgow, since 1978
