Impressive Five Bats 5 Tien of Tu Duc ANNAM. 5 Tien, ND (1848-83). Tu Duc. NGC MS-63. KM-457.1; Sch-359. Variety with clouds surrounding the top two bats. Obverse: "Ngu Phuc", two bats in clouds above and three bats in clouds below; Reverse: "Tu Duc Thong Bao". Bright and lustrous with a thin veneer of tone, this lovely high grade example boasts boldly struck design features with satiny surfaces. Wholly original looking this handsome piece offers a pleasing appearance and is sure to be a welcome addition to the next collection it enters. The symbolism and inscription on this type represents a clever play on words where the word "Phuc" meaning happiness has a similar sound to the animal depicted, the bats. In Chinese culture the word for bat is "Fu" and is pronounced the same was as the word for good fortune. Lot # 43127 from our April 2023 Hong Kong auction where we offered this same type in the same grade (PCGS MS-63) where it garnered an impressive $44,000 hammer. Estimate: $20,000 - $30,000.
