ATTICA. Athens. AR Tetradrachm (17.09 gms), ca. 465-460 B.C. NGC EF, Strike: 5/5 Surface: 2/5. Brushed. HGC-4, 1596; Starr-Group V. Obverse: Helmeted head of Athena right, with frontal eye; Reverse: Owl standing right, head facing, with spread tail feathers; olive sprig and crescent to left; all within incuse square. Some horn silver and dark encrustations, but otherwise a lovely example of this earlier design far less common than the mass-issue "Owls" of the Peloponnesian War period. Estimate: $700 - $1,000. Click here for certification details from NGC.
