Artist: Peter MARSH (Active c. 1950 – 1970) Creation house: The House of Peter Marsh, Birmingham, England Period: Circa 1955 – 1960 Style: Neo-Gothic, Brutalist, Arts & Crafts-inspired Important and rare brutalist-style table lantern, evoking the architectural shape of a medieval pagoda or a castle turret. The structure, entirely handmade in hammered iron and patinated wrought iron, supports a spectacular lead-mounted setting. It welcomes a mosaic of massive fractured glass cabochons (chunk glass or glass slabs) in magical, saturated hues: ruby red, sapphire blue, emerald green, and amber yellow. An outwardly flared hexagonal base with beveled facets is framed by a geometric frieze. Connection with the Wizarding World Although created in the mid-20th century, this English handcrafted work seems straight from the sets of J.K. Rowling’s saga. The raw ironwork paired with the mystical gleam of the glass blocks immediately evokes the hushed, centuries-old atmosphere of Gryffindor’s common room or the mysterious vibe of Diagon Alley boutiques (such as Flourish and Blotts or Barjow and Beurk). Once lit, the lantern casts spectacular colored light beams, creating an ambiance of a cabinet of curiosities or an alchemist’s laboratory worthy of Professor Dumbledore’s office. A superb visual bridge between mid-century British design and the aesthetics of the Wizarding World. Materials: Hammered iron, lead, massive rock glass Condition: Good vintage overall. Patina of use and charming traces of natural oxidation on the sheet metal cap (evidence of authenticity). The stained glass of fractured glass is complete, with no cracks or major losses. Electrical: Original electrical system functional (sold as is, English-era electrification (UK plug)).
