Egbert Van Heemskerck the Elder (1610-1680) - Elderly Scholar Reading

Attributed to Egbert van Heemskerck the Elder (Dutch, 1610-1680), this 17th-century oil on canvas depicts an elderly scholar or monk quietly reading from a large open book. The intimate composition is illuminated with subtle chiaroscuro, drawing attention to the figure's thoughtful expression and creating a contemplative atmosphere characteristic of Dutch Golden Age genre painting. Themes of wisdom, study, and devotion are reflected in the restrained palette and careful modeling of light and shadow. The painting is accompanied by a French certificate of expertise dated November 16, 1946, signed by Jean Rouxfort, attributing the work to Egbert van Heemskerck the Elder. Housed in a period-style gilt and ebonized frame. Canvas: 8" H x 6" W, Framed: 14" H x 11.5" W.
