He was an educator, historian and preacher and took over the First Presbyterian Church of Charlottesville, Virginia in 1866, following Rev. William H. McGuffey (of McGuffy Readers fame). He was also an historian, and at one time he owned Arrowhead, an historic property in Albemarle County.
