![[First Edition] Stuff and Nonsense and So On Walter de la...](https://bbys.imgix.net/2788/a5ab8f2c428b83cc648f4720719e4e48322baafb74a28f932e9162de2d8667b7.jpg?auto=format&w=1080&q=75)
Publication: London, Constable & Co. Ltd., 1927 Formatting: 8vo, pp. xi, 112. Condition Report: Very Good book in a Near Fine dust jacket. The original green cloth binding remains tight, square, and exceptionally bright, with the gilt spine titling remarkably crisp and free of oxidation. The hinges are sound, and the boards show virtually no shelf-wear. The text block features traditional untrimmed fore and bottom edges, which, along with the top edge, display some moderate, scattered foxing and age-toning typical of the paper stock used during this period. Internally, the pages remain largely clean and supple, though occasional faint spotting is present to the endpapers. The book is protected by a wonderfully preserved, unclipped dust jacket (priced 7/6 net on the front flap); it remains vibrantly coloured with its striking Art Deco design fully intact, exhibiting only the faintest signs of rubbing to the extremities and slight toning to the rear panel, now housed in a protective archival sleeve. Catalogue Note: This is the first trade edition, first impression. This volume is wonderfully illustrated with over thirty woodcut engravings by 'Bold' (a pseudonym highly distinctive in its 1920s style), which perfectly complement the author's whimsical verses. While copies of the 1927 trade edition are relatively common on the secondary market, finding one complete with its original, unclipped dust jacket, especially in such an unusually bright and well-preserved state, is quite scarce. The striking cover art, reflective of the late 1920s aesthetic, elevates this from a standard poetry volume to a highly collectable piece of interwar book design. Stuff and Nonsense and So On is a delightful excursion into the whimsical, the absurd, and the delightfully surreal, penned by the master of the atmospheric, Walter de la Mare. Blending humorous verse, rhythmic limericks, and playful rhymes, the collection showcases de la Mareâs characteristic ability to weave magic and mild eccentricity into everyday language. Accompanied by striking modernist woodcut illustrations, this enchanting volume appeals to both children and adults alike, standing as a charming testament to the golden age of British illustrated poetry.
