Kleemann - Briefe Schiffahrt

Kleemann - Briefe Schiffahrt

(Kleemann, N.E.). 'Kleemann may be seen as an adventurer and may have pursued doubtful business practices, but one thing is for sure: [with his books he] contributed ... for the active political agenda of Joseph II in the southeast' (M.Baramova, Seiten 266, in: Heppner u.a. Encounters in Europe's Southeast, Bochum 2012).- Leicht stockfleckig. Titel verso mit kleinem gekrönten Monogrammstempel 'E.L.'. (Kleemann, NE). Letters on Shipping and Trade in Hungary, Slavonia, and Croatia. Written on a journey through these countries in 1773. Translated from the Italian by NEK. Prague, Gerle, 1783. 2 leaves, 90 pages, 1 leaf. Small octavo. Modern wrappers with the year '1783' stamped in black on the front cover (slightly dusty). First edition. - Due to the detailed, often ruthlessly honest descriptions of the conditions along the trade route, the anticipated conflict with the censors was possibly the reason for the anonymous publication and the mystification surrounding the book's origin and the alleged translation from the Italian.] 'Kleemann may be seen as an adventurer and may have pursued doubtful business practices, but one thing is for sure: [with his books he] contributed ... for the active political agenda of Joseph II in the southeast' (M.Baramova, pages 266, in: Heppner et al. Encounters in Europe's Southeast, Bochum 2012).- Slightly foxed. Title verso with small crowned monogram stamp 'EL'.
