LOT OF 2: US M1880 HUNTING KNIFE AND M1887 HOSPITAL CORPS KNIFE. Lot consists of: (A) M1887 Hospital Corps knife. It is noted that 1056 of these knives were made at the Springfield Armory from 1889-1891. This example is the first pattern with a blade that widens toward the tip. The blade etching "HOSPITAL CORPS. / U.S. ARMY" is about 3 - 1/2" from the guard, which is standard on the first type knives. Grip is turned and grooved maple. Nickel plated brass crossguard and pommel. The blade remains bright with scattered blemishes and edge wear around the tip. Nice light patina throughout. The knife comes with two scabbards, a Type I and Type II example. The Type I scabbard is marked "WATERVLIET ARSENAL" and inspector initials "C.H." and "C.M." on the leather belt hanger. The Type II Scabbard is marked "ROCK ISLAND / ARSENAL / W.T.G." and inspector initials "R.H.S." on reverse. Brass belt hanger is marked "R.I.A.". Both scabbards remain supple with scattered blemishes. CONDITION: Very good. (B) M1880 Hunting Knife in standard configuration with single edged spearpoint blade, a brass guard, turned maple handle, and is complete with its leather scabbard with brass hook. The brass guard is stamped "U.S. / SPRINGFIELD" on obverse and "4432" on reverse. The scabbard is faintly marked “WATERVILET / ARSENAL” on the leather portion of the hanger. Blade exhibits a gray patina with freckling and sharpening. The handle is clean but displays dents in the pommel. Scabbard is supple with crazing at hanger. Brass components exhibit a pleasing patina. CONDITION: Good.
