MARINE. FINISTÈRE, PORT D’AUDIERNE. 2 Certificates concernin - Lot 229

MARINE. FINISTÈRE, PORT D’AUDIERNE. 2 Certificates concerning François Guillaume PASSART, Lieutenant of the Navy, Commander of the corvette L’ALERTE, which, pursued by two first-rate English frigates on the sixth of last month, sought refuge under the protection of the forts of Audierne. He ran aground on the rock known as La Gamelle, maneuvered the ship, and ordered his cannons to be thrown overboard; the lack of rowboats prevented the rescue of part of the crew. The corvette, in a dreadful state, eventually sank almost beneath his feet. We certify that his conduct in such an unfortunate affair was always as one would expect from a true republican and was beyond reproach. (Details of the naval battle and events). Certificate issued in Audierne on the 14th of Vendémiaire, Year 2 (October 5, 1793), signed by the officers and volunteers of the Second Battalion of the Orléans Formation, stationed in Audierne (32 x 41 cm) and a certificate drawn up in Audierne on the 14th of Vendémiaire, Year 2, signed by the temporary deputy commander of the 4th district of the Northern Coast, commanding in Audierne, and by the battery commanders. (21 x 33)
