Sébastien Bourdon (1616–1671)

French school of the 17th century (ca. 1640 – 1650), Sébastien BOURDON (1616 – 1671), cercle of. Portrait of a Young Nobleman, bust-length. This small-format cabinet painting depicts the bust-length portrait of a young man set against a deep red drapery. The clothing—a dark doublet with a flat white collar and wide, luminous shirt sleeves—corresponds to the fashion of the 1640s. The composition combines the psychological depth of Dutch-Flemish portraiture with the delicate use of light characteristic of the Baroque era. Stylistically, the work follows the tradition of the Antwerp School around Gonzales Coques, a connection further supported by an old, handwritten inventory note in ink ("N° 7...") on the reverse of the panel. Compositionally—particularly in the striking interplay of the arm posture and the theatrical curtain—parallels can also be drawn to the "Nordic style" portraits by the French painter Sébastien Bourdon. Oil on panel (oak). 19.2 x 16.8 cm (image size). With frame: Approx. 32 x 30 cm. Frame: 19th-century gilt frame in the Régence style with carved corner and edge ornamentation (shell and tendril decor). Condition: Good condition consistent with age. Finely developed craquelure. Professional, older retouches along the margins. The reverse of the wooden panel shows a natural, stable surface structure. Provenance: private collection from Northern France.
