This book is a collection of those essays. According to a contemporary review in 'Time and Tide', "'Penny Foolish' is a entertaining a book as we have come across for several months. It sparkles from beginning to end. And it is packed with good sense about a multitude of things." Sitwell says of 'Friends', "If you must have faithfulness, be content to rely on dogs ( or upon those human beings who most resemble them)for the friendship of a dog, or of an old general, implies devotion without criticism"; of 'Friends and Enemies' "Never forgive your enemies - it only makes them more bitter!"; of 'English Food', it "inclines us to wish that Napoleon had in the end conquered England, so that French chefs could have reformed our food".
