All auctions / Miscellaneous / The Annunciation Anton Kern

This composition is based on an altarpiece by Giovanni Battista Pittoni (1687–1767), which was commissioned shortly before 1730 for St Mary’s Basilica in Kraków and formed part of a five-part series intended to adorn the side altars of the central nave. Kern’s early works show a strong influence from Pittoni, of whose work he produced numerous copies. Kern’s drawings and paintings often resemble those of his master so closely that they were mistakenly attributed to him. | 1709 Tetschen – 1747 Dresden | 15.-18.
