All auctions / Porcelain & Pottery / Two Ancient Costa Rican Terracotta Tripod Rattle Bowls - Zoomorphic Supports

Pre-Columbian, Costa Rica, Guanacaste-Nicoya. A pair of pottery tripod rattle bowls, each raised on three hollow zoomorphic supports containing clay pellets that sound when the vessel is moved. The larger bowl stands on fish-form legs, each surmounted by a modeled armadillo-like creature, with applied decoration around the rim and twisted loop handles at the shoulder. The smaller bowl rests on zoomorphic fish or shark form legs with anthropomorphized faces, below a band of incised decoration. Rattle tripods of this type are characteristic of the Atlantic Watershed and Guanacaste regions and were used in both domestic and funerary contexts. Item # 204120
